On July 1, GummyBears Robotics had the opportunity to visit the Carroll Center for the Blind, where we worked with a group of around eight students to build basic FIRST LEGO League (FLL) mechanisms.

We started by introducing ourselves, with each volunteer sharing their age, grade, and favorite activity. The students then introduced themselves, helping everyone get to know one another before we began.

Next, we asked the students to open the bags of LEGO parts in front of them. One of our Student Leaders guided everyone through the different pieces by naming each part and describing it. The students sorted the pieces into groups and practiced remembering where they had placed them, making it easier to find parts during the build.

Once everything was organized, the students chose which mechanism they wanted to build first: either a scissor lift or a grabber. After a short break, we returned and began building together. We worked through each step at a comfortable pace, making sure everyone understood how the mechanisms worked and how to assemble them.

The students learned quickly, and many of them finished so fast that they had time to build the second mechanism as well!

One of the biggest highlights of the day was creating the largest scissor lift we've ever built, breaking our previous record. We even filmed the new record and turned it into a new YouTube Short for our channel.

Overall, we had an amazing time at the Carroll Center for the Blind. It was incredibly fun to teach the students how to build simple FLL mechanisms, and we loved seeing their enthusiasm, creativity, and excitement throughout the day. We can't wait for another opportunity to build and learn together!
