On June 12, GummyBears Robotics visited the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell. We gave individual presentations and ran a series of stations with various activities to a group of around twenty students!
First, each of our volunteers talked about a passion project we worked on. Lucas talked about his FLL team's box robot and explained how it solved different missions in the UNEARTHED robot game. Mia talked about a basic teleoperated VEX robot that could pick up cones and stack them on top of each other. Rubin showed a video game machine he built, and Ruyan talked about the basics of microcontroller ecosystems. Amartya explained and demoed his super high-tech face recognition system. Lastly, Shawn wrapped up the presentations by talking about a mobile robot he designed that can detect hidden gas pockets that fixed sensors cannot reach.
Then, we split up into mini stations, each with several fun robots and games to try out. These included the microcontrollers and video games that Rubin and Ruyan had built as well as the cool robots Mia and Lucas brought. We also included additional teleoperated LEGO EV3 robots, which could score ping pong balls. The highlight was definitely Amartya's face recognition system station, where he quickly trained the system to recognize and detect students' faces and names.
All in all, we had such a fun time sharing our passion for STEM with these students. One of them even asked if he could have the help and resources to build his own robot at home!
